Abramis is a genus of freshwater fish in family family Cyprinidae of order Cypriniformes, containing the typical breams. The type species is A. brama, the carp bream. Native to the Palearctic ecozone, the Abramis species are widespread throughout northern Europe from France to the Caspian Sea.

These fishes reach maximum overall lengths of 35–82 cm (14–33 in) and maximum recorded weights of about 1–6 kg (2–13 lb). Possessed of laterally-flattened lozenge-shaped bodies, the Abramis species range in coloration from brownish to silver-grey.

Omnivorous, these fishes are bottom dwellers and feed on plant matter, invertebrates, and occasionally on smaller fish species, and they serve as prey for larger fishes, including pikes.

The generic name Abramis derives from the Greek αβραμίς (mullet or bream).

Many states' departments of natural resources are beginning to view the carp as an angling fish instead of a maligned pest. Groups such as the Carp Anglers Group[2] and American Carp Society[3] promote the sport and work with fisheries departments to organize events to introduce and expose others to the unique opportunity the carp offers freshwater anglers. The American Carp Society held a tournament in March 2006 in Austin, Texas that paid out $275,000 to the winners. Popular baits include canned corn and homemade doughball concoctions known as boilies in England.

Since being purchased Mirror Pool has been meticulously stocked with a large stock of big carp. To maximise your enjoyment, we limit the number of anglers to only four per week and we permit non-fishing wives and girl friends go free of charge.

We provide legal night fishing and no additional permits are required. Each swim has a flat area big enough to take the largest of dome tents.

All snags have been removed from the lake; the lake bed is of hard gravel with silt pockets and there is no weed to worry about.
